I am sixty-five years of age. I have been married for forty-two years and have one son. I was born in Roanoke; my extended family is scattered throughout the area in Stewartsville, Salem, Vinton, Hardy, Lynchburg, Blue Ridge, and Montvale. I grew up in Vinton; when I entered college, my parents moved to a farm in Franklin County.
Upon graduation from college, I accepted a job teaching in Virginia Beach. I continued to work in the Virginia Beach public school system for thirty-five years. When I retired in 1999, my husband and I returned to the area to be near our family members.
My son attended JMU and worked in the computer industry in Northern Virginia. He and a partner started a franchise with Peak Restaurants and began opening McAllister’s restaurants in north-eastern Tennessee. They opened a McAllister’s at Tower’s Mall in November.
I am an avid reader. The freedom of choosing to start the day with a cup of coffee and the crossword puzzle is one of the great joys of retirement. During the winter, I spend long evenings with a book, a jigsaw puzzle, needle work, or painting. If the weather is reasonably warm, I am outside in our garden or on my mother’s farm. I enjoy gardening and have found the Master Gardener’s organization a wonderful way to expand my knowledge and to share my enthusiasm with others. We support several animal assistance programs in the area.
Although I am a dog person, I am somewhat befuddled by the fact we ended up with four cats. Observing wildlife is one of the perks of living in a rural area. I am always amazed and entertained by the squirrels, chipmunks, deer, birds, and waterfowl.

Sharron - I just wanted to say how sweet your post was about the "sisterhood" in the valley and your kind words about me. I am quite honored. It is good to know we can stick together even when we have different views! Sister Deb
