I have lived in Pennsylvania, Indiana, Tennessee, and now Virginia. I attended Ball State University in the 1970s. History has always been an interest of mine--I taught college history off and on part-time for many years--and since 2007 I have been a full-time history professor. I generally dismiss ideological labels as simplistic and divisive; but I consider myself a Teddy Roosevelt progressive in political affairs and an independent-minded libertarian in personal matters. I have been married to my best friend since 1973. My amazing wife is an elementary school special education teacher. We have three grown daughters. One is a gynecologist at Johns Hopkins and another is an English instructor at Virginia Western (where I teach history). I currently have two big black canines, Richelieu (Ricky) and Liberté (Lib), who are very strong, smart, and dependable partners.
