I'm a native Oklahoman--an
'Okie from Muskogee' to be exact. I earned a BA from the University of in Oklahoma
in 1966, and attended graduate school at the University of California in
Berkeley, CA. I lived in Berkeley for 40
years, where I worked as an electronics engineer, taught electronics at Merritt
College in Oakland, wrote several computer books, and eventually became a
software engineering consultant for Internet startups. I am an
instrument-rated, 1000-hour private pilot, and I occassionally consult on
general aviation for the Roanoke Times.
I have been characterized as a "vice-brained autodidact,"
which I take as a compliment. My wife Cynthia and I married in 1966. We have
two sons: one lives in Berkeley and the other in Vienna, Austria. We have two grandchildren. We, along with our Australian Shepherds (Jack
and Shirley), retired to the Roanoke Valley in 2006.
