Here is a new idea why don't you choose a regular citizen? Quit pulling these rabbits out of your hat. Let someone be a part in city goverment like it should be. Someone who is not a political fixture or a person with a vested interest or a pet project to advance. A mom or dad who wants to take a turn to help turn around the city not stay till retirement...  Aubrey Hicks

First and foremost, it gauls me that all these past council members who lost their seats because the public told them they were not wanted anymore by not re-electing them, would apply for the seat.  What is it that they don't understand that their time has come and gone.  It's pure arrogance on their part and certainly in NO uncertain terms should anyone sitting on council give them a second thought.  I'm not talking about ones who simply decided to not to run again when their term had expired. And just because the seat has been occupied by a black person it should not be a factor in filling the position.  There is no one of the 17 names listed in the paper who's has the honesty,  integrity and government experience as Rupert Cutler.

i agree completely with Audrey Hicks, but we all know that would not happen here with the good'ole boy network that rules Roanoke.

Since Council narrowed its choices down to Mr. Culpert and Bill White, this was the better of the two. The fact that Bill White would get two votes is incomprehensible to anyone with a memory. This is the same man who received immunity to testify against someone in a criminal case, in which he would've received or been in the position to receive prison time. How could he be considered to represent Roanoke in any capacity?

With Roanoke's financial problems and immediate need to address them, the choice made is one of expediency and necessity. A citizen without extensive knowledge, that Mr. Culpert brings to the table, would not be a sound choice at this time, because there needs to be someone who can hit the ground running.

Roanoke needs competent people sitting on City Council, and, if Mr. Hicks and Howard would like to see new people in these seats, they need to start developing those individuals to be able to demonstrate those abilities. Otherwise, just having people "regular" people on Council for the sake of having new individuals will be more damaging than continuing to have present and former politicians continuously recycled through the system.

I also agree with Audrey Hicks. However there are those of us that are willing and able to disrupt the good ole' network.I'm not concerned whether they are boys or girls.Time for just trying to be good and DOING the right thing.I also think that these people think that we are stupid and don't know what is going on.WRONG

Regular people are what makes this country great.Have you ever heard the expression "can't see the forest for the trees"?Exactly what are the qualifications for a city council position?
