    Taubman Museum of Art

Roanoke's newest building, the Taubman Art Museum, is opened November 8. It's been the subject of celebration, controversy and conversation from the beginning.

The Taubman museum is a magnificient piece of architecture. I believe it will become a signature building for Roanoke and perhaps Virginia. Whenever I visit New York City the most memorable building for me is the Guggenheim museum. As a child visiting NYC I always remembered the winding walkway. I hope todays' kids will enjoy this building and perhaps learn an appreciation of Art in the process. Congratulations Roanoke on your fine achievement!

I visited the Museum on opening day (Nov. 8th) and the crowds were overwhelming. I plan on becoming a member and visiting on a more "normal" day to enjoy the experience without the crowds.  Roanoke should be proud of this museum and I believe it's influence will have a major impact to downtown Roanoke. Maybe this is too premature but I wonder if the day should come as to how the museum would expand its exhibition space.

The Taubman Museum of Art has been open to the public for nearly 3 months and many have come through the doors. As a volunteer, I have noticed that the reactions of visitors have been very positive. FYI- the museum was featured in the February issue of the American Art Review (American Arts Media, Inc.). Not only was the Portrait of Mrs. George Gribble (Norah) by John Singer Sargent on the cover, there were 14 pages of information and photos on the museum’s collection. I would encourage anyone that has not yet been in for a visit to give it a try. Roanoke has a world-class museum!

It is the most ugliest building I've ever seen. Here we have is a historial downtown Roanoke and the building (museum) itself clash with it. It look like what you see when you enter a victorian living room with a MODERN table in the center. It's unattractive.

I don't mind the museum, I just wished they had a better taste in design.

I visited the new museum and brought along friends who had never been to Roanoke.I worked in town for 9 years so I knew what to expect. They could not believe such a building was sitting in such surroundings. We were there when downtown was busy and parking was another matter. If I had not been famalier with the streets I doubt we could have found how to get to the building. They wanted to know if Roanoke could afford such a building, why didnt they do something with that big old store downtown?I finally figured out they were talking about the old dimestore building.Thats what I think was in there at one time. While the museum was a adventure, the highlites of the visit as far as they were concerend was our trip to Happys flea on Sat. and our tour of Smith mountain lake region on Sunday.I cant say I agree with them but I guess only time will tell.

"the highlites of the visit as far as they were concerend was our trip to Happys"

That pretty much says it all...

Happy's is great...if you are in dire need of throwing stars or sole grease.  I haven't been in years, as I grew out of my ninja phase about twenty-odd years ago.

Taubman is okay.  The building is okay.  We'll see what's up in a five years or so...

looks like the wreck of the flying nun and takes all of 15 minutes to go thru the entire thing, what a massive expense for such disappointment.

I recently visited the museum with my wife and three teenage sons.  With all the publicity surrounding the museum we were all very excited to go.  I have to say that we were very disappointed in the exhibits, the interior design of the building, and the building layout itself.  Am I the only one who noticed that the lighting on the exhibits in the sunlight cast tremdous glare off the artwork?  I think that building would be a great place for a new mixed use office/retail space!  CITY MARKET 2!
