Re: Roanoke City Schools redistricting plan

I guess I should clarify a bit more...The United States has the best emergency health care in the world.  I would agree that we are behind when it comes to preventative health care.  I think most people would agree with that.

Regardless, I still don't want my kid's Doctor's office (which does a great job right now) run like the DMV or the post office.

    Good job backpedaling Walker.

But either way I'm merely try show you that just because an organization is run by the government, NPO, or "for profit" doens't make it efficient. I know you would like to believe that privatising things is going to make them run better but its not necessarily true.

I know you "don't want my kid's Doctor's office run like the DMV or the post office" (BTW: Every visit to the DMV since moving to VA has been pleasant and under 30mins which is more than I can say for most doctors visits.) But do you want decisions about your kids health and treatment being decided by a per patient profit ratio? Maybe the decision is whether the insurance company thinks that test is the best thing for its bottom line. Thats what you have now.

Why do you think that privatising and putting profit in education is going to benefit our society? Poor neighborhoods will still have crappy schools and south county will still have high test scores. I might benefit one class of americans but not probably not America.

Not quite backpeddling...I can admit when I exxagerate or generalize too much.

I can also agree that ALL private companies aren't always efficient.

But, larger countries that have tried GOVERNMENT Health Care have diminished the quality of care.  Even MORE bureaucracy and red tape to overcome.   Did you read that article about the woman from Canada yesterday who was diagnosed with Cancer adn told she had to wait MONTHS to see the doctor?  Her family flipped out and petitoned the govt., they moved up her visit a bit...but it was too late at that point and she died soon after.

That's the kind of crap I'm talking about.

And what about the 20 million+ illegal immigrants that are here draining the health care industry right now?  Are we supposed to absorb even more of their share than we already have?

Privatizing schools provide competition...which education sorely lacks right now.

We are FORCED to send our children to the school the govt. tells us to (unless you have the money to go private).  They have a monopoly.  No insentive to do ANY better, year after year.  Its why our schools have failed for so many years.

Competition FORCES schools and teachers to put out a better product.

Where you live would have NO bearing whatsoever under my plan.  Vouchers would allow you to send your child anywhere you want.  If you suck as a parent and your kid is rotten, the school would have the right to tell your kid to take a hike.

The honus would be on BOTH the parents AND the schools to produce.

Accountability and responsibility are left where they belong...on individuals.  NOT the government.

"larger countries that have tried GOVERNMENT Health Care have diminished the quality of care."

there are 36 countries ahead of us on the ranking of quality of care. ALL have government health care. It can work. You can't just throw the blanket of failure on the government health care and end the article. It's just not true.

"Did you read that article about the woman from Canada yesterday who was diagnosed with Cancer adn told she had to wait MONTHS to see the doctor"

Yes I did. Walker, all of the stories you hear on the news about gov health care happen in the US too. People are denied proper care and misdiagnosed in the US. They just pay more for it here.

"what about the 20 million+ illegal immigrants..."

We are already paying the health care for the illegal imigrants. Why not set up a system to cover the cost so hospitals aren't forced to close and deprive EVERYONE in a community health care.

    Back to the subject

"We are FORCED to send our children to the school the govt. tells us to..."

As of when? You can take you little ones out of school and teach them at home or send them to north cross or community school. No one is FORCING you to send your kids to public schools. The government supplies public education....if you don't like it, send them somewhere else. Its your choice.

"If you suck as a parent and your kid is rotten, the school would have the right to tell your kid to take a hike."

Boy that sounds like a great idea, what happened to the GOP ideal of "no child left behind". This attitude will probably lead to higher crime rates, more police, and ultimately high taxes and costs to the private citizen to protect themselves.

"Accountability and responsibility are left where they belong...on individuals.  NOT the government. "

Face it Walker....Individuals are not responsible. The government needs to step in.

THe idea is simple for both health care and schools. The government supplies a basic product....if you don't like it, pay for something else. If the private product is SO great people will pay for it. You still have your competition to drive up quality and a basic service is supply to the masses.

Incidents like that happen far more frequently in other places with DMV style health care, but that will change if Jughead gets his way.  The government (Jughead and the Dems) is already talking about taxing beer, soda, cigs, sugar even more.  This isnt about health...its about cash and control.

As for forced schooling...do I have to pay taxes to support public education?   I do?   Interesting...can i send my kid to any public school I want?  I can't?   Why is that?  Hmmm...sounds forced to me.

Individuals are what make this country work...there are losers who aren't responsible, of course...they typically work for the government.  The government doesn't FIX things...they've had 30+ years to get it right.  They haven't.  Enough said...
